milano etc

BLOG 2008-12-20 Rome was best kind, then on to Napoli. When I got to my hostel I noticed there was a lot of litter around the square outside, so I figured I was at another dodgy dans. I went up and met some good people, and a hostel owner who was all fast talking and sporadic. He asks me what I want to see and I say Pompeii, so he hands me a tourist map and then starts circling everything on it and talking fast about what everything is. I should be overwhelmed but I just don’t care, I’m going to Pompeii and the map would be just as useful if I handed it to my nephew Kyler. I was up into around 1am chatting with people and webcaming with the folks. The next day I set out for the train to Pompeii. I have a general idea where it is, but I walked past it the first time and had to go back. When I get there I see this guy that looks familiar. I go over to talk to him and it’s one of the gents from the hostel I stayed at in Firenze. He says, “I think I saw you at the Coloseum in Rome yesterday.” I was there so he definitely say me in my big red jacket, all Canadian, Patriotic like. He was on the way to Pompeii too. It still blows my mind a little that an Australian and a Canadian can end up in 3 consecutive cities that are hours apart from each other, But that’s the way she goes. We had a good time talking English and touring around the ancient abandoned city of Pompeii, and we got a discount on the audio guides and entrance. When we opened the audio guide map it was clear that we were not about to cover all 70-something audio sights on the map. We saw some cool stuff, had a few laughs and took a lot of pictures. We went in just before 12 and around 3-4pmish it started to rain. He was concerned about his camera as our cheapo umbrella’s were not very expansive and you still got a bit wet around the perimeter............. apposed to my internal organs? He decided to head back to catch a train so he could get back to Rome on time, as he had only come down for the day. We said our goodbyes and I headed back into the labyrinth in search of the third and largest amphitheatre. It was raining pretty hard at this point but I wanted to check it out. Along the way I came across Audio guide dialogue sight #34 as I pressed the 3-4 on my audio device I remembered that he had left his ID in order for us to get the audio devices. I was about 15-20 minutes into my walk so I hurried back, the path I had come, hoping he would retrace his steps rather than cut strait to the theatre where he knew I would eventually be. When I got back to the start he was waiting there so we dropped off the devices and took a train back into town where we ate the best Pizza in Napoli. Then we said goodbye again and I went back to the hostel for some chats and rest. It was then I booked my ticket and hostel in Venice. Oh yeah, I had discovered when I awoke that all the litter from the day before was caused by the street market that raged outside my window. I slept through it fine, but it’s so tempting to walk through. The only thing I bought were socks from a place that appeared to be legit with all no name gear for sale. I was half temped to pick up some Nike shocks, but I knew they had to be gafed from somewhere, or illegitimate. They had everything you wanted there for low prices, but in the end it didn’t work out that grate. 50Euro’s for a pair of shocks, is like $85CND? I guess its good, but whatever. Watch your pockets in Napoli, and they tell you not to go out after 12am. I heard several accounts of people trying to scam money from tourists, like one guy who walks through the train and pretends to check your ticket and then asks for a tip. I encountered a guy who was watching me use the ticket machine at the train station. I figured he was just waiting and was trying to hurry me up by talking Italian over my shoulder and pointing at buttons. I wasn’t having any trouble, I was just reading the screen, while eegs was “Helping” me. I eventually gave up because the machine was not accepting my two 50 Euro bills for a 51Euro ticket ohhhhhhhh there’s the euro sign.... now how to I use the 3rd function on a button on this again? Yeah I can’t figure it out, and I don’t have much bat left, so on with it. I leave the machine and the guy is pointing to another one and trying to get me to follow him, but I just walk on to the ticket desk and do it the old fashioned way. This time I wrote down the time and price of the ticket I wanted so there would be no double purchases made. Did I tell you about that? Anyways, if I didn’t I ended up waisting 5 euro on a ticket, no worries, lesson learned. I get my ticket and the guy from the machine waiting for me and is talking Italian and point to his hand and the machine, asking for some money for the “Help” he gave me. I pretend like I don’t know what he’s talking about and say “Ce” holding my tickets. I follows me until I get into McDonalds, which is closed, but the door is open because there are two businesses in there. Anyways, I wasn’t concerned and he didn’t get a smack in the mouth so it all worked out. Hopped on a train and jet scene. I ended up taking a train 2 hours later than I had originally planned, because I had forgotten that the night before I decided to take the earlier, faster, more expensive train, just to enjoy Venice. I was confused at the price so I didn’t buy the ticket in time, and ended up taking the 8 hour train for 22 Euro’s cheaper. _______________________________________________________________________________-- Venice was a fun time, just walked around and took some snaps. Took the water bus up to my hostel, chatted with some people at the hostel and went on out of it. Ate some pizza, that was deadly. Now Im on train to Milano, then London. Get this out when I can. Batt’s dying fast peace fromt he east
